Rhino Safari Camp
Rhino Safari Camp is a small, owner-managed safari camp within the Matusadona National Park, a remote wilderness area which has been designated an Intensive Protection Zone for a small but successful population of the endangered black rhino. Set on a peninsular at the mouth of the Ume River, the camp enjoys stunning views of the nearby Matusadona mountains and magical Lake Kariba.

This rustic yet comfortable camp accommodates a maximum of twelve guests in six twin bedded rooms on stilts overlooking the lake. The rooms are built of wood with thatched roofs, reed half-walls and roll down reed mat blinds at the front. Each room is en suite with an open air shower – with loads of hot water - flush toilet and hand basin. The rooms are situated discreetly along the shoreline and offer magnificent views of the lake.

The main boma comprises an elevated wood and thatch dining, lounge and bar area and is the place to meet, eat and relax.

Rhino Safari Camp offers a balance between the mobile tented camp and the increasingly luxurious permanent camps. There is no electricity and the camp lives with what nature provides – with a few added extras. The camp is lit at night with paraffin lamps, candles, and the flickering light of the camp fire.

The camp prides itself on being small and highly personalized, staffed by people who are passionate about their land, their environment and the wild animals in it.

The remoteness of this protected area combined with the plentiful water supply provided by the lake combine to make the Matusadona home to a wide variety of wild animals. The big five: black rhino, elephant, lion, leopard and buffalo are all found here. Hippo and crocodile and a wide variety of water birds make use of the lake.

Kudu, warthog, zebra, bush buck, impala, and numerous antelope species as well as over 350 documented bird species are also here. The call of the African Fish Eagle will never be forgotten, nor that of the ground hornbill. Vultures, bateleurs, storks, geese, ducks, plovers and other water birds abound.
